talks

In this interactive talk, we celebrate the magic of maths via a series of awe-inspiring mind-reading tricks, puzzles and mathematical mysteries, that are sure to leave your students amazed. The audience also have the opportunity to try to beat Rob at a maths game that involves a cunning strategy.

Rob Eastaway is the Director of Maths Inspiration (theatre-based maths shows for teenagers), and has given talks in a huge range of settings; from London’s Gielgud Theatre to Shakespeare’s Schoolroom in Stratford. Rob is also a hugely successful maths author, whose books on everyday maths include the bestselling Why Do Buses Come In Threes? and Maths On the Back of an Envelope. Until recently he was the puzzle adviser for New Scientist magazine, and is a regular guest on BBC Radio’s award winning podcast More or Less.

The Power of PAPER FOLDING, fran watson:

Paper-folding is a powerful tool – from solving problems in maths lessons to solving problems in space exploration!
In this engaging and interactive talk you will be challenged to imagine solutions and practically create them with paper.
We will explore modular origami for the intrigue of creating different models from the same “building blocks”, think about origami engineering (in the products we all use to the forefront of space travel), and work on our visualisation skills to plot paths to future careers.

Fran Watson is a mathematics communicator and teacher whose vast experience in education includes 8 years working at NRICH (creating workshops and writing material for the website), 14 years teaching in UK and International primary and secondary schools, and additional jobs in between engaging with audiences for The Royal Institution, the British Science Association, Techniquest and various Science festivals in her quest to be the ultimate “maths redcoat”.  She is happiest when sharing the joy of maths with audiences through singing, story-telling, paper folding and playing games, amongst other media.

Your host for the day is Zoe Griffiths. Zoe is excited to welcome you to Inside Maths! Zoe will be a familiar face throughout the day; kicking off and concluding events in the theatre, introducing the other speakers and activities. Zoe’s role is to make sure everything is running smoothly, but she will also briefly show the audience a few of her own favourite bits of maths…including her favourite live maths demonstration, a display of smoke rings in the theatre!

Zoe Griffiths is a mathematician who travels the UK and internationally giving talks and workshops in schools (through Think Maths), at science festivals and comedy nights. Zoe has talked about maths in places ranging from the Numberphile YouTube channel to BBC Radio 4. Previously, Zoe worked in primary maths coordinating the Royal Institution’s Masterclasses programme. Prior to this, Zoe worked as a secondary maths teacher. Zoe is still a teacher at heart.
